Active Retirement Communities

The term active retirement communities refers to a housing arrangement, much like a planned resort, that is designed keeping lifestyles for seniors in mind. Seniors are categorically people over the age of 55, and those who don't need any form of daily assistance with their medical and personal care. This housing arrangement can be anything from suburban condominiums to mobile home parks and to subsidized housing projects. There are also themed communities, such as the golf retirement communities in Florida and Arizona among other places. Some other kinds are gated communities, where there is restriction on moving out of the premises.

Active adult retirement communities also refer to small scale housing facilities for seniors, called 'senior apartments' which are subsidized by the local charities and not by municipalities. The seniors here either live boarding house style or in individual apartments where they have common areas for socializing. These active retirement communities usually provide one or two meals a day to its residents, along with access to kitchen facilities for preparation of other meals.

Active retirement communities are basically divided into two types of living; independent living and assisted living. With independent living, the person needs no special care or attention and is free to come and go when necessary. This is because the home provides sufficient social and recreational activities to keep them busy and happy. These homes don't even have dining facilities but have kitchens in each living unit. The difference between these homes and the regular apartment living is that all the residents of the building are senior citizens.

Assisted living is where the resident has some medical condition requiring medical attention. This condition may be minor or major but medical attention is provided at the home. The resident may also be offered help in normal life functions like cleaning and food preparation.

However it is advisable to join an active senior community only if you are healthy where your daily medical and personal care is provided by visiting nurses. You should be able to keep in touch with doctors and caregivers with the help of family or friends if required, and not with the help of trained staff. You can search on the website of the retirement community and see what their offers are.

Adult retirement communities are sometimes converted private homes or apartment complexes which don't actually follow any design or layout. The larger communities may have a community center structured in a separate wing of the facility where recreational activities like watching TV, board games, a mini library, computer and music system may be present. The smaller active retirement communities may only have a community dining room and sitting area as its common area.

The activities calendars of an active retirement community is designed while taking into consideration the age and resources of the residents there. The more energetic and fit the residents, the more activities will be designed for them. There are usually full time directors on hand who plan out these services.

Most active retirement communities have some medical or personal care services available on hand. It is usually a local visiting nurse who is entrusted with the care of the residents of the community. Some communities have social workers on hand who will contact medical personnel for the residents if and when necessary.

There are some communities offering great amenities and located in a great location; if you want to join it, make sure you can pay for it. If you are living on a budget, choose the active adult retirement community according to your budget.
